RareAirShoes.com Exclusive In 1987 when the first Air Trainer was released, it was designed by Tinker Hatfield who's aim was to have a shoe that could be used for a wide of activities, an "all-purpose" shoe. The Nike Air Trainer Max was their top of the line cross training model for 1991. The shoe featured a new rear and forefoot strapping system. The forefoot strap criss-crossed the foot to lock it down whilst the padded ankle collar and ankle straps ensured a perfect fit at the heel. The cutaway sections and the plush, padded lycra tongue and ankle collar were a prelude to the the next generation Air Trainer Huarache. The name of course came from the Air Max cushioning units that provided maximum heel and forefoot cushioning. Combined with a full length phylon midsole, large flex grooves and a modified waffle grip pattern, the sole provided all the flexibility and traction needed for weight lifting, running or court sports. Mesh side panels and the perforated toe box ensured the foot stayed cool through the whole workout. Retroed after 14 years, this classic example of Nike research and design excellence is now available for collectors to experience anew.
